UDP Relaying for multicast

Post by JohnD97 »

Hello,
Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could relay multicast traffic from one vlan to another? This is very unconventional I know, but it is needed to resolve an issue at our school district. We have been able to get traffic to relay with unicast between 2 vlans, just not multicast. Thank you.

this is mc-routing. You need a mc-routing protocoll like PIM or DVMRP. If you doesn't have OSPF or RIP you can use DVMRP. At the OS9000 mc-routing is possible.

Our issue is a video system sends out a multicast with a ttl of 1 which can't be changed. The relay renewed the ttl for us but it only does it with unicast. Would PIM be able to renew the ttl?

no, I never heard that one function in the switch can renew the ttl.
than you can try to make a connection between the two vlan (untagged ports in different vlans with a cable). But you have to make sure that STP doesn't block the ports (with 1x1 you can disable stp at one of the ports). And also you should use policies that only mc traffic can pass this link. I never tested this setup - but it should possible.
