After using this method:
root (hd0,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda5 console=ttyS0,9600 panic=5 single init=/bin/bash
boot
-i get this following message & system got rebooted
IP: routing cache hash table of 8192 buckets, 64Kbytes
TCP: Hash tables configured (established 262144 bind 65536)
NET4: Unix domain sockets 1.0/SMP for Linux NET4.0.
802.1Q VLAN Support v1.6 Ben Greear <greearb@candelatech.com>
vlan Initialization complete.
request_module[block-major-3]: Root fs not mounted
VFS: Cannot open root device "hda5" or 03:05
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 03:05
<0>Rebooting in 5 seconds ..no switch back.

ok...
two things can be happen.
1. the system uses other partition (because of an update on secondary partition)... then try to use /dev/hda6 as root
2. the system uses appliance server and the cabeling internal set the harddisk on the 2. controller. if this is the case try to use /dev/hdb5 or /dev/hdb6
