SPA3 - what is it for?

Hi,
My question is about SPA3 board. What does it do? I found that it needs if there is a VPM35 voice mail in the system, but does it mean if it is present, when there is no working voice mail?
I looked for information in the system documentation, but i just found information in the voice mail section.

The situation:
There is a 4400PBX M3 with a faulty voice mail board, so it is powered off for a while. Today morning the 8770 showed me an alarm from the SPA3 board. "CPU transmission problem" and it is occured in the C1 link, which shocked me... The board was the SPA3 board.
I am not know much about voice mail systems, but i think this board somehow required for the VPM35 voice mail system, and now it just generating heat. Its status is in "config 2 running". I think i can disconnect this board, because the voicemail is not required / not in use / there is no card to use now :)
I would like to know if there is another task for this type of boards, or just "speech processing"?

Just "speech processing". For old 4635 Voice Mail.
In old system was many board - VPCPU (VM CPU), MSBI (HDD support) and SPA3 (voice access - 8 accesses per board)

So if i'm right, if there is no working voicemail, i can turn it off, and i can delete from the system, without any serious consequences?
