Omniswitch 6800-48 No Boot

Post by filewalker »

Hello Community,

I am new to this Forum and first of all, please excause me for my bad englisch!

I have same Alcatel Omniswitch 6800-48s here with me, but they won´t work at all.
If i power them up, they are running und displaying a "0" on the small display, but al LEDs are off. I can´t get a connection via ethernet nor via terminal.
This is not normal, isn´t it? I don´t have original console cable, but i built my own one using this pinout from http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Fduwa95b3Ac/T ... onsole.jpg

It is said to be used for 6850, but i could not find one especially for 6800-48, so i hoped that one would work. Or do I need another pinout?

It woult be very nice to get help!

Hi,

Slot Indicator LED displays 0 when the switch is booting.
Consult OS-6800 Hardware Users Guide for details.

Regarding Console pin-out connections compare with DB-9 to RJ45 by Cedric or Pin Out diagram for DB-9 connector to use with AOS or any HW user guide, search for pinout (console port pinouts).

Thank you for your fast response!

I already found this informaion, that the "0" is showig, that the unit is booting, but i let it go for 5min. and nothing changed so far.

I have also found this pinot, you mentioned, but i was not able to "read" that. I did not get the point with inside view, outside connector and the wireing. RJ45 Connectors have 8lines in a row, in this picture they have two rows of 4 lines.
In the hardware user guide, the pinout is very strange. It says:

1 NC
2 NC
3 RXD
4 GND
5 GND
6 TXD
7 NC
8 NC

But for terminal connection you need more than just rxd und txd. even if they mean 3-->RXD+ 4-->RXD-,... this woult be strange, wouldn´t it?

Thanks for helping me!

I'm having the same issue. I'm using the connector provided and was able to connect just fine. Was in the process of upgrading the switch and did a reload working no rollback-timeout and now the switch freezes before anything shows on the screen.

Thank you very much for your help.
My problem was, that i did not have this adaptor. So i tried to build my own using an rj45 patchcord, cutting one socket und soldering an db9 socket. But i had problems to identify the positions of the cables in the rj45 connector.
Your pictures were very helpfull!

Now i build my own "serial Cable":

RJ45
1 orange/white
2 orange
3 green/white
4 blue
5 blue/white
6 green
7 brown/white
8 brown

and connected them to DB 9 connector:
1 NU
2 brown/white
3 orange
4 blue/white
5 green
6 blue
7 orange/white
8 brown
9 NU

I connected the cable direct to PC Serial Port and RJ45 Console Port of Omnistack6800. I started TerraTerm using ComPort Settings Baud 9600 Data 8bit Parity none Stop 1bit Flow Controle none.
When powering up the Switch I get NO! console output. Are the Settings correct? Is my Cable Pinout ok? Or do i need to cross 2 lines (rxd/txd)? What is wronge there? I have 3 of these switches here and they all show the same. I dont think, that they are all dead...

Thank you for your help. Would be nice to hear from you soon.

Somewhere is wrong.
DB9->color->RJ45
1 NU -
2 brown/white 6
3 orange 3
4 blue/white 2
5 green 4
6 blue 7
7 orange/white 1
8 brown 8
9 NU -

If you have a cisco adapter compare with:

Code: Select all

   DB-9 | RJ-45 Cisco | RJ-45 Alcatel
_____________________________________________
    1 0 0
    2 3 6
    3 6 3
    4 7 2
    5 4 4
    6 2 7
    7 8 1
    8 1 8
    9 0 0
So if you have a Cisco adapter try simply to change 3-6, 2-7, 1-8
May be try other baud rates, since 9600 is default, but could been modified earlier.

Thank you so much! I thought the RJ45 Pins or numberd in this way:
8 7 6 5
4 3 2 1

But they ar number this way, if i get it wright now:

8 6 4 2
7 5 3 1

I´ll change my Cable Pinout and will post the results than.

I have made a new cable with the right pinout. (i hope so)

i chekd every thing dupble, but i get no console output! I use terraterm with vt100 emulation and tried different baud rates.
What do i wrong? Is there a jumper inside the unit, to reset it, or something to solve my problem?

Thank you all for your help!
