VRRP requirements

Dear all ,
I want to install VRRP on two 6540-24u switches, how I connect these two switches , does I need direct connect cable between the two switches ?
if yes is Stacking cables work? or I need up-links interfaces? (like two SFP+ up-links)
I Know this protocol is Layer3 protocol use IP address for master and Backup
