Need more Port monitoring information

Hi i'm currently studying Port-monitoring.

When use this feature?

This feature is not all packet type stored?

I'm used ping, but not searched icmp packet in monitoring file.

Just searched ARP-REQ, 0027, II-88CC, UDP.

I need more information this feature.

The manual is not enough.

Please give me more information.
