how can i activate or use the feature search by name on the 4008 and 4018 sets
is that possible

Those doesn't have a keyboard QWERTY or similar, so no idea how to achieve that. Maybe only with OTUC.

just long press "directory" button on 4018. short press gives you personal book access, long press - to directory.
