Softphone QoS

Post by johnnymcd »

I have been asked the question of how a softphone on a pc, using the same nic card as data traffic is able to prioritise voice traffic.

Best answer wins :)

There are qos mechanisms built into windows, also refer to the qos packet scheduler. The softphone tags traffic just like any other phone when configured.

In fact, you should activate the 802.1q on your NIC configuration.

There was an Alcatel software that created a virtual NIC so it had a different VLAN on it, it was for Windows XP....can't remember the name...

VLANs are no longer supported with Softphone 9.x, so you have to use the QoS (DSCP) settings per IP domain.
