1642EMC "1642 Edge Multiplexer Compact" help

Does this unit require certain type of cable to access the console using putty, if not does it require a certain type of software to access it?

I work for a company that resales network equipment and I would like to be able to make sure that the unit is working correctly i.e. powers on and can access the unit before I send it out to the customer.

I have tried using a null modem cable with the standard Blue Cisco serial cable. as well as a Ethernet cable with a standard serial dongle with baud rates from 2400 - 115200 using putty, and all that I get is a line of garbage characters.

Any help would be great.
