4760 as snmp proxy

Post by paulr »

Hi all,

I have a client with a 4760 that wishes to get snmp traps from the OXEs in his network and pass them to his nms. While it would be possible to point each OXE directly to his nms, Alcatel documentation states that the 4760 can be an snmp proxy (apparently this requires Professional Services to become involved.) $$$

Has anyone had success in sending snmp traps from a 4760 to an nms? I have defined a hypervisor on the 4760 and pointed it at my trap reciver, but have no success. Directing snmp traps from the OXE to my trap receiver shows that the reciver is fine, but I can't get anything from the 4760.

I have pointed the OXE snmp output to the 4760, enabled the "Managed By SNMP Proxy" tickbox on the OXE in the technical directory, checked that the snmp filters in the Alarms application are set to correlation is true and pointed my hypervisor at the trap receiver.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

As from R3.0 Omnivista it is impossible to send SNMP because it's not implemented in the 460 package. It used to be implemented in R2.1 and lower.
So whatever you program in omnivista, it won't work.
Through Professional Services you can acquire the software to make an snmp proxy of 4760 except that it will not be free.

Note: From R3.0, Alcatel states that all snmp should be routed from the OXE directly to NMS. It is related to the implementation of snmp in the oxe software at that time (5.0).

My customer is running R3.0.15.0.c :(

It seems like PS may be the only way to go.

Thanks for the insight luckyme2. I installed a R2.1.17.b and found the file inmcsnmpproxy.exe in the 4760\bin directory. To setup the 4760 as an snmp proxy, do the following;

1. From Control Panel>Add Remove Programs>Add/Remove Windows Components, select Management and Monitoring Tools. Click on details, select both Simple Network Management Protocol and WMI SNMP Provider, install and reboot the server.

2. Define a Hypervisor in the Technical/System Directory of the 4760 with the ip address of your NMS.

3. Copy the file inmcsnmpproxy.exe to the 4760/bin directory of the server and open a command window in the same directory.

4. Run the program as quoted here "inmcsnmpproxy -v2" to create an snmp proxy sending version 2 traps to your hypervisor.

5. Search for and copy the file nmc50.mib. This mib needs to be provided to the NMS.

6. In the 4760 Alarms application, setup the snmp filters to suit your needs.

7. In the Technical/System directory, on each PCX that you wish to have traps sent to the NMS, tick the "Managed by SNMP Proxy" box in the Data Collection tab.

Your 4760 is now an snmp proxy.
