BGP load distribution when multihoming

Post by matiasniosi »

I wanted to know if anyone has any experience in using BGP load distribution techniques in an omniswitch 6850 when multihoming.

- BGP prepending (adding mi AS number multiple times in the as-path when advertized to certain ISPs). Is this possible in a 6850? If you can prepend when advertising some routes to one ISP and not in a second one, you can make certain inbound traffic prefer certain ISP.

- Local Preference. If I can set a different local preference to each internal subnet I can distribute outbound traffic to my ISPs.

This way I can divide my public IP range in subnets and give them different treatment setting the local preference (for outbound traffic) and prepending (for inbound traffic).

The thing is that I think that local prefence is global and won't let me set it depending on the source address for outbound traffic.

Anyone has had experience using these techniques or any other type of solution?

Thank you!
