6850U- Can a GBIC cause, somehow, damage to switch Port?

Hello there!

We have a new OS6850U-24 with SFP ports. We need to connect it with a Media Converter using a GBIC (Gigabit Interface Converter). We connected the LC connector on switch thorough GBIC and the other end via T-SC on a 100Mbit media converter. There was no communication between them. Someone told me that a wrong GBIC can have a strong signal and can even damage our switch If do not have the proper care.

Is it true?

Thanks!

Never heared of anything like that, of course Alcatel recommends using their Alcatel certified SFPs, and will only support you with TAC if you use only that SFPs..(while in generell all other SFPs work).
You had the same SFPs on both sides (e.g.1000Base-SX on both sides?)
If you Media converter is only able to do 100Mbit it may use a 100MBit FX Gbic? -> then you need a matching SFP in the alcatel..

we have had some issues with the SFP ports on a few OS6850-U24X not working properly. GB SFPs work fine in another switch. I am not sure if dust or static has damaged the ports. We have seen a mix of some ports not coming up at all and others there the SFP is detected, but we are unable to establish a link or see excessive CRC errors. All the SFPs are ones purchased through ALU.

We haven't had time to open a TAC case yet, we've just moved the SFP to another port. would like to find a way to diagnose the port
