'alert The maximum number of rule is exceeded'?

Hello guys,

on friday we had something strange in our network. On one single port on a OS 6450 had gathered almost every single MAC-address to itself. I have some possible solutions for that in mind, but i need to know the following:

Code: Select all

FRI JAN 23 09:40:41 2015 GM alert The maximum number of rule is exceeded
We got thousands of entries of that kind within the swlog of the respective switch, all of them within less than one minute. No other switch or port has such entries.

Ive already tried to find information by searching this forum, Google, the ALU Trouble-Shooting-Guide for OS6450 and of course the manual - none of them really helped.

What software release is that?

I never had this issue, so i would upgrade&reboot look for loops and/or open a SR if the problem persists.

The software currently running is OS6450-U24 6.6.4.177.R01 which is quite old.

Does the entry in the log stand for a loop? But shouldn't this be covered by STP? And what does "GM" for this entry mean?

However: We'll check for an existing loop immediately.

I don't know what it stands for, but as you say you see nearly all macs behind a port it could suggest that.
STP should take care of STP-detectable loops, but there may be other loops as well (e.g. STP-eating desktopswitches, Voip Phone aso.)
you can try loopback-detection for that.

Release Notes don't state anything that seems releated and I don't know what GM is.. open a SR!

I stil sometimes notice the problem. Seems to be relate to vlan mobility rules. no more infos, we're just rebooting the switch to clean up things and workaround the issue.
any help ?
Thx Matteo
