Integration with Programs

I was wondering if there was a way to link a softphone with a program that has phone numbers so that you could simply click on the number and it would dial using the softphone. We have a phone-a-thon at our college with a program that supplies the numbers. I would like to be able to click on the number and it dial on the softphone. Is this possible and what would I need to do to make this happen. I know it not a simple as that but if someone could point me in the right direction and the processes I would need to start to look at.
