Connecting network drives for access via VPN

Another ECS question, hopefully I'm not the only one in the world trying to get one of these things working!
What I am trying to do is make a network drive available when I use the VPN service on the ECS.
When I am in the office and connected directly to the LAN I can see the network drives. When i VPN in via the ECS I cant.
The ECS, my network drive's PC and my laptop are all in the same workgroup (no domain controllers here). I can see the ECS from the server and access the directorys, I can see the ECS and the server from my PC, only thing i can not see is the server's network drive when connected via VPN.
any clues or points in the right direction?
