4635J boots into Linux partition and not into VM application
Hi everybody. I have the following problem with a VPU6 and 4635J software. I recived the board from Alcatel and it was suppose to work after I turn it on. I realised that the system boots into the Linux partiton and not into the VM application. It used to be a boot menu in VPU5 boards (after presing Supr in the boot sequence) but now this option is not avaible in this board. I only have the menu where you select wich partion to boot (A or B) and many other options that don´t solve my problem.
I don´t know what relase has the VPU6, I suppose 5.2.0 or perhaps 5.4.0. I am not an expert in 4635, I am learning. I don´t know if the only solution for this is to re-install the system. Any suggestions? Anyone face this issue?. Thanks in advance. Regards.

If you don't find any steps in the documentation related to your problem, it is maybe the case to reinstall the software. It is probably corrupted. When you have started for the first time the VPU didn't you followed the steps described in the doc? Also prior management of the OXE?

Re: 4635J boots into Linux partition and not into VM application
Hi. Thanks for the reply. When I started the VPU, it started in the Linux partition. I did managment in OXE as documentation explains, but this doesn´t help because VM doesn´t start. I can only see with Config command that VPU6 is in service but with vmail command that the link is not stablish. I don´t have experience with VPU6 so I don´t want to start re-instaling it until someone confirm me that is the same as VPU5. It is the only VPU6 I have and my customer will kill me if we have to wait for a new deliver.

Re: 4635J boots into Linux partition and not into VM application
Unfortunately I don't have a VPU6 to make some tests and see what menus does it present on the serial output. if I were you I would take the VPU from site and bring it to my lab make some tests and eventually reinstall 4735 on it.
Regards.

Will be hard to tell the customer if I have to retunr VPU6 to Alcatel.
I would like to ask you the following: the VPU cames with two cables, one for ethernet and the other for V24 ports. About the two connectors of the V24 ports (the balck and the red): both are connected to different ports of VPU6 or is the same port and one connector has cross cables?. Thanks. Regards.

Re: 4635J boots into Linux partition and not into VM application
One is for serial connection (I think that the black one) and one (I think that the red one) is for modem connection. You must use the black one but there is a trick: not with the serial cable used for OXE crystal (with DB25) , but with a crossed one. That is if you want to reverse your serial cable for OXE use a crossed DB9-DB9 serial cable, attach it to your OXE crystal config cable on DB9 side and voila you have a config cable to be attached to VPU's black (I think) port.

i' ll append this:
@tincho.rn: if you use the vpu in your lab you'll need also a cpu board with a configured vpu board (because vpu is looking for a position table and the clock signal from cpu). please send some captures from these two serial ports and you can get more specific help.
regards...
the backpanel-connection for ethernet and serial ports is the same on any alcatel cpu (cpu3/5/6/7 and any vpm and vpu cpu i know (but did'nt know vpu6)tot3nkopf wrote:One is for serial connection (I think that the black one) and one (I think that the red one) is for modem connection.

That's right tgn. I was only trying to give him hints on how to workaround making a straight DB9-DB25 and how to connect to VPU. the use of a CPU on lab it's elementary. ticho is not a newbye in OXE. He just lacks the experience in 4735.

Re: 4635J boots into Linux partition and not into VM application
Hi. First of all, thanks for your aswers. I will explain why I asked that question: at the begining of the post I wrote that I don´t find the way to enter into de boot menu. I am looking for something like this:
B Boot the System
^DB Boot the System (clear autoboot)
^DD Run Diagnostics
But this doesn´t appear. When system boots it only appears the following:
System File Status: 00 01 00 01 ......
System File Ram: 00
System Boot Area: A
Enter Boot Command: (here you put H to see the options)
When pressing A, I get the following (after Linux boots):
==============================
A4635 Application Server
==============================
VPx35 login: (here I know commands reboot and swinst)
From Alcatel told me that the option to Boot menu doesn´t appear because I am using the "red" cable and not the "black" cable. As tot3nkopf wrote, I am don´t have expierence with 4635. So I want to know if is it possible that this cables gives different information.
I hope I make my self understand. Regards.
