egress-rate "max-burst" statement

The config guides are rubbish on this topic. I run these systems over microwave transport, where the egress throughput is much less than the interfaces facing the radio ingress ports.

Can anyone provide examples or links (with the formula math) on how and why the max-burst feature is used? I would love to see some real world examples, if anyone tunes QoS with this feature.
