SR1 bricked after failed upgrade

Post by petrus_lt »

SR-OS gurus,

I've somewhat bricked a SR1 when trying to upgrade from r7 to r12.

When booting r12 it upgraded the internal IOM microcode/firmware, rebooted, then said "SR1 : unsupported chassis" or something like that, and refused to continue booting.

I tried then to boot from the previously-working r7 CF, but it said "Unrecognized chassis", and began to reboot in a loop until I powered it off. 10.0r5 says the same.

I know, dumb me, I should have read the r12 release notes beforehand as it's the first release that does not support the SR1, but man, it should have stop before upgrading the IOM...

Anyhow, does anyone knows a way to downgrade / reflash the internal IOM ?

I did the same on my LAB SR-1.
It booted as soon as I changed the boot.tim to R11, as well as the both.tim of course.

Try that...
This was with 12.0.R1.

Good luck

Boy that's good to hear !

I thought I had a very expensive paperweight, and R11 was the one I didn't tried yet!

For the record, here is what I had from console:

Code: Select all

Alcatel 7xxx Boot ROM. Copyright 2000-2014 Alcatel-Lucent.

Build: X-12.0.R5 on Tue Aug 19 10:31:25 PDT 2014 by builder
Version: 0x29
Starting IOM card
COLD boot on processor #1
CPU Control FPGA version is 0x2C
?Preparing for jump to RAM...
Starting bootrom RAM code...
Boot rom version is v41
>>>Testing mainboard FPGA chain...
>>>Testing SDRAM from 0x02200000 to 0x42000000
Board Serial Number is 'NS051050377'
Do not know what chassis type this is!

Rebooting...

Your boot.tim file is 12.0.R5, and that will not recognize the 7750 SR-1 as anything other than an expensive and oversized paperweight ;)

Try to change the boot.tim file, and I think / hope you will be up and running again..

Just tried to boot with 11.0.R12, but still no luck. The router won't even get to read the CF, and just loops rebooting.

I assume you meant boot.ldr instead of boot.tim right? The question I'm asking myself is how to flash/downgrade the bootloader without even getting to the cli...

I tried to break at several times during startup loops, hoping for a vxworks shell or something, but nothing :(

Yeah, you are right.. boot.ldr.
Now, this is a tricky one...
I dont know how to break it into VxWorks or how to downgrade the microcode...

I don't even know if it's possible, quoting Alcatel-nsp (https://puck.nether.net/pipermail/alcat ... 00111.html):
Actually, the newest versions of TiMOS won't down-grade the boot-loader anymore (it was introduced in 6.0R12, 6.1R7 and 7.0R1). Previous versions, though, should allow you to downgrade. In any case, though, the newest bootloaders are always backwards compatible.
We can see here that this is not the case anymore, and bootcode from 12.0.R5 isn't compatible at all.

This is really stupid, as SR-OS 12 doesn't support this platform, it shouldn't have upgraded the boot loader. It didn't even asked human interaction and upgraded it without asking...

I'll see if I can still open a case on this old router, and if ALu can do something for it.

Just opened an AR. Waiting for a feedback from ALu.
