Replacement Cycle for CPU Hard Drive
I am trying to write a life-cycle schedule for replacement on the a crystal hardware PCX. Any suggestions on how often the HD should be replaced. I know at one time when i worked for a BP we would replace the HD each time we did a version upgrade. Any thoughts on the subject?

Re: Replacement Cycle for CPU Hard Drive
hello,
This question it is not easy to answer.
There is not certain time to change a HD. It could last many years with out a problem .Even when you upgrade is not nacessary to change if the upgrade is not major.
So i suggest cpu dublication for High availability issues with a back up image of your pcx to your archives.
And for sure update your database with latest back up.

Re: Replacement Cycle for CPU Hard Drive
Thanks for your input. I do currently have cpu duplication and i do backup my DB. I was actually thinking of running a hybrid system with one physical HD CPU7 and a redundant one on a server. That way if i lose connectivity to the server the CPU7 is up and running. Just an idea. Just trying to maintain a 5 nine system.
Re: Replacement Cycle for CPU Hard Drive
mixing appliance server and crystal cpu (like cpu7) is NOT possible.
i prefer to change a harddisk every 4 to 6 years. also i'll prefer to change only one disk or buy it on different stores or vendors (to make sure that they have not the same factory date).
also on newer systems keep watching the hardisk with smartctl (and the incidents).

Re: Replacement Cycle for CPU Hard Drive
is it possible to have one cpu as a virtual hard drive and the other as a physical cpu7? I had spoke to someone from ALE and they said it was possible.
Re: Replacement Cycle for CPU Hard Drive
no, not possible. the only way i know is to replace the cpu's with appliance server (which can be virtualized). also the boards in crystal rack must be intip or iop type.
