INTER-CHIP INTERFACE ERRORS Detected

Post by akihero »

today i encountered this error and was wondering if anyone knew the cause and procedure for this type of alarm

Inter-Chip Interface Errors Detected
Complex 1 (internal datapath problem): Trap raised 1 times;

i also received a link alarm prior on the same card which was the link between a 7950 and a 7750

If it was just a single event. I would monitor. If the problem recurrs, reload the card in a maintenance window with “tools perform card <slot> power-cycle" and if the errors are still being reported, get the card replaced.

As to the meaning of the message, there are a few hardware errors with similar wording. Look at the output of "show log event-control chassis" to see which event has non-zero counters.

I assume it's probably this one: tmnxEqCardChipIfCellEvent "The tmnxEqCardChipIfCellEvent notification is generated when an inter-chip interface (XPL2 bundle) experiences internal datapath cell errors."

The XPL is the bridge chip between the MDA and the IOM.

Bear in mind that some of these hardware errors are suppressed by default, i.e. they will not cause an SNMP trap to be generated, but you can change this in the configuration.

Hello. What is the difference in tools perform card <slot-id> power-cycle and clear card <slot-number> ?

Thanks!

"tools perform card > power-cycle" performs a hard-reset and remote power cycle of the IOM/IMM. Before that command was introduced in 6.1.R13/ 7.0R7 the recommendation was to re-seat the card for these kind of errors. It should not be used as a direct replacement for "clear card" which performs a soft reset.

There's a chance that if a card has been generating errors that after a power cycle, a card will fail its power on self test and therefore not come back up. So you may want to do this in a maintenance window / have someone on-site with a spare ready.
