OXE uses Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology, or S.M.A.R.T. (sometimes written as SMART), is a monitoring system for computer hard disks to detect and report on various indicators of reliability, in the hope of anticipating failures.

This tool comes with Linux.
You can find more information on the WikiPedia

Best way to recover is have a backup...

yes, indeed best you've a backup.

if not...

in case of oxe
take the hardisk to a normal pc and connect it to the ide-bus (or better ide to usb connector).
i prefer linux on this pc. but you can also use a windows with "linuxreader".

in case of an oxo... because of the encryption of the filesystem, i'm thinking there's no way to recover something.

Hi, I've found on an OXO as the database is moved to the NAND flash you just need to put the new drive on the CPU and it will configure the data back to the new drive. Some things like greetings will be missing but if a backup is onhand then no issue

There is a technical communication from Alcatel about this, TC0536 called "RECOVERY OF CLIENT DATA ON DEFECTIVE OR INVALIDATED HARD DISK".
I haven't had the need to try this myself, but maybe it can help you?
